New to the game of poker? Looking to brush up on your game? Here are a few helpful hints to keep in mind when you sit at the table.

• REMEMBER: You don't have to play every hand. A lot of players who are new to the game of poker feel as though they have to enter every hand, but this is not the case. Make sure to take your time and carefully study your pocket cards, your chip stack, position at the table, and your opponents. Weigh your odds. If you think the odds of winning are not in your favor, don't hesitate to fold. Playing more doesn't always mean winning more.
  
  
• Pay attention to your table position. In poker, how you play a given hand should be determined by your table position in relation to the Dealer. Count the seats between you and the Dealer Button. Start at your seat and move to the right (counterclockwise). If there are a high number of seats, you are seated in what is called "Late Position", meaning that you will get the chance to watch your opponents' actions before making your own. If there are a small number of seats, you are seated in what is called "Early Position", meaning that you are forced to act before most of your opponents. Depending on your style of play and your pocket cards in a certain hand, both positions can be advantageous.
  
  
• Consider your pocket cards. In the 52-card deck, there are a total of 1,326 variations of 2-card Holdem starting hands. Within those 2-card combinations, 78 of them are pairs. Consider these odds when contemplating whether or not you can complete your hand. Also, acknowledge these combinations in regards to your table position and the actions of your opponents. You don’t need to act in every hand to succeed at poker. Use your pocket cards as the foundation when you make educated decisions on whether or not to play the hand, or fold.
  
  
• Think before you bet. Have you completed your hand? Or are you drawing for a better hand? Watch your opponents. Do you think that they have completed their hands? Or do you put them on a draw? What hands can you beat? And what hands would beat you? Consider these questions before taking action in a poker hand.
  
  
• Learn how and when to act. If you are facing a bet, you want to examine the size of the bet in relation to the size of the pot, and the strength of your hand. Before calling and/or raising, you might want to think about the possible reward of winning in comparison to the risk of losing. Depending on your style of play and your current table, it may be better in the long run to secure a win of multiple smaller pots rather than risk losing your chips in a large pot.
  
  
• Manage your table image. Keep in mind that while you are weighing the play style of your opponents, they, in turn, are watching you. Every time you sit down and act at a poker table, you create a table image. Depending on how you play, your table image could affect your changes of winning a hand. Every time you enter a hand, your opponents will be watching and analyzing your every move. Keep track of how often you raise and call and remember that repeated action, such as aggressive raising, will be seen around the table. Make sure to take advantage of the choice to muck your cards. While there are times that showing your cards can be advantageous, there are other times where that tactic might be damaging. Control what you allow your opponents to see. The game of poker is not only about reading other players, but how you represent yourself.
